To maintain proper water flow, change the filter at least once in 6 months.

Once you have replaced the water filter, test the dispenser for free water flow. The home may have low water pressure. To operate properly, the water inlet valve requires from 20 to psi. To help determine this, shut off the water supply, disconnect the supply line from the inlet valve, and hold the line over a bucket.

Push the water dispenser lever down for 3 minutes. For this period, the water reservoir will fill up completely. Certain ice dispensers built into the freezer compartment of your refrigerator offer the option of crushed or cubed ice. If you've chosen cubes but get crushed ice instead, there's no need to worry -- the unit isn't broken.

This helps clear out the cubes that may otherwise hinder the icemaker's operation. Remove ice clumps and shavings, then replace the bin -- the bin-removal procedure may vary based on the model of the refrigerator, but it is designed to come out fairly easily.

Wait a while and then press the crushed ice button on the refrigerator, followed by the ice cube option. This resets the unit. In some cases, there may not be enough water flow to the ice-making unit, or an ice buildup may block the mechanism that moves when switching between cubes or crushed ice.

Inspect the ice bucket for buildup, rinsing it with hot water to clear it out. If low water pressure is to blame, the refrigerator also won't dispense water properly. Check all water connections for pinched or bent lines.
