Woodworkers have their workshops and potters have their kilns. What do IT professionals have in their homes? Yes, I confess I'm one of those geeks who over the years has collected a vast assortment of hardware for learning and testing purposes. And I'm sure that many of you who are reading this article are equally guilty of being hardware scavengers.

After all, ours is a profession where we need to constantly learn new things and be exposed to new technologies, and since the best way to learn is by doing things hands-on, setting up a lab at home for trying various things out is clearly going to put your feet on the road to success in your profession. IT pros who pursue technical certifications also need to practice, practice, practice, and having a lab set up at home for doing this is well worth the investment if the certification you are pursuing is likely to advance your career in some fashion.

VMware, of course, is still a very popular technology at the enterprise level, so if you're going after a VMware certification you need a good lab for this too. But since I'm not a VMware expert myself, I thought I'd ask an actual expert in VMware technologies if he could describe how he set up his own home lab for simulating real-world VMware environments.

He is an active blogger and is on Twitter davidbarker Let's now put on our thinking caps and listen carefully so we can learn from David how to set up a fully-functioning VMware home lab using components you can buy easily from Amazon. I've been wanting to build a VMware home lab for a while at home now to test out new builds and versions of software not only from VMware, but Microsoft and others as well.

Plus, being a vExpert and having access to production versions of software licenses from VMware was a huge bonus. The major component I wanted to play with and get more familiar with was vSAN.

I thought about doing the nested ESXi route, but with the limited resources already on the NUC I just decided to do a full 3-node cluster. Let's start off with a list of my bill of materials multiply everything by three and I'll provide Amazon links for everything :. I chose the NUC6I3SYH as I didn't have a need for a faster processor and the dual-core hyperthreading gave me four logical processors, which is what I was looking for anyway.

I downloaded the latest build of 6. You will also need to download a version of vCenter — I suggest 6. Obviously, you'll want your vCenter and ESXi versions to match. One option, especially for a lab environment is to download the 6. Another great use for a lab! The new feature with vCenter 6. In previous versions of vCenter, you had to do a bunch of manual work, which William describes here in his blog if you choose to not go with 6.

But with vCenter 6. Once vCenter is installed, you're all set. Make sure to create your disk groups and add your disks to vSAN:. But hey, it's a lab! And that's it! Congratulations, you now have a 3-node vSAN lab up and running. Start deploying machines and testing things out.

And if you break it, you just get more practice deploying ESXi and vCenter. There are some pretty great things you can do now, with your own set of resources at your disposal. This has meant that for many of those years, my home office basically comprised of a few laptops and screens. Most of which he does via his very capable home lab. Image : Home lab rolling rack example setup.

As Thomas A. But seriously, I would like to fail a lot more and a home lab will create endless opportunities for me to fail.

Of course, all the while seeking success, but you got that already. In general, a lab is a place where you can safely perform experiments. Most of you reading this article are techies and sysadmins. As you know, trying out new things on production equipment never ends well.

This risk is the reason why we build ourselves a sandbox environment to dabble, test and fail in, all from the comfort of our own homes. To date I host my test labs on servers in North America and Europe. I will also be using my home lab for remote backups, network monitoring and alerting of remote serversand to setup wired UAP APs, among other things.

As I told Yves, our chat had me revisiting the idea. In light of this fact, I wanted to share this journey with you, starting with the selection process of the hardware for my home lab.

Well sort of. Where do we begin? Location, Location, Location. Location is critical for a number of reasons.

The choice between the home office, living room, closet, attic, basement or garage all depends on a range of important variables. These include room temperature and ventilation, workable space around your equipment, ease and distance of network cable runs, foot traffic, hour ease of access, power, noise levels from your home lab, and more. Choose wisely:. In my office I have laptops, a desktop, a server and other devices so this location will require shorter cable runs.

Keep in mind your floor plan and how you will accomplish the cable runs. Think about these things before, not after. In other words, map everything out, make notes and create lists. Next, we need to decide how we will store the equipment modems, routers, switches, servers, patch panels, UPS systems, power strips, cooling fans, etc.

Network cabinets and racks, are often confused with S erver cabinets and racks. R outersswitches, patch panels, and the like, are usually much shallower than servers.

Also, networking devices often produces less heat than servers.Updated April 26, I spent hours each day experimenting with Linux—I loved it. Part-way through the mass interview a man walks to the front of the room and asks if anyone has ever used Linux. He takes me out of the interview for the lab assistant job, introduces me to the department director.

They took me out to lunch. By the end of the day I had my first job as a Systems Administrator. Learn things on your own and it will broaden your opportunities. One of the best ways to learn about systems, applications, and technology is starting a homelab. A Homelab can give you an enjoyable, low stress, practical way to learn technology. A homelab will also help you find out the technical areas in which you are interested.

It is a place outside of the corporate environment for your personal projects, growth, and a fun hobby. While not all homelab projects lead to professional development, many of them do. The homelab environment for most technologists consists of one or more servers running a virtualization environment and a storage solution to support various virtual servers providing services. While I was at it, I bought an Ethernet dongle. To manage the network with it, you need some initialization scripts changes. I experienced the following problems so far:. The cheap Ethernet dongle works on my server and my Macbook. Once, the server was unreachable when using both NICs.

I also had some issues reserving IP addresses on my cablemodem admin page, so I suspect the routing problem might be on the modem. If I get it at all will be to avoid losing packets and for lower jitter and latency for better NAS experience. If you are running only a single ESXi host with a few guests operating system on your virtual machinesI find that using the web client is pretty straight-forward.
